Sony Movie Channel Turns Up The Heat On Saturday Nights In June With Hot Summer Movies

Sony Movie Channel Turns Up The Heat On Saturday Nights In June With Hot Summer Movies

Schedule Also Includes the 50th Anniversary of JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS on June 19 and the 60th Anniversary of THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR.T written by Dr. Seuss on June 20

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Movie Channel is turning up the heat on Saturday nights in June as part of its "Summer Uncensored" stunt when it spotlights hot summer-themed and romantic adventure-filled movies like HARDBODIES, PRIVATE RESORT (featuring one of Johnny Depp's earliest lead roles) and LOVERBOY (with GREY'S ANATOMY'S Patrick Dempsey). Other films capturing the fun of summer include THE HOLLYWOOD KNIGHTS (with then Hollywood newcomers Michelle Pfeiffer and Fran Drescher), JUST ONE OF THE GUYS, SHEENA, THE BLUE LAGOON, SPRING BREAK, CALENDAR GIRL, STEWARDESS SCHOOL and more.

And to help set the mood, Sony Movie Channel is offering a Glossi (a digital magazine) that captures some of the most memorable scenes from these summer movies, making it a fun read anytime of the day on any device, whether it be a computer, tablet or mobile phone. The "Summer Uncensored" Glossi is available on SMC's website at starting June 1.

The "Summer Uncensored" stunt also includes the broadcast network HD premiere of 1986's HARDBODIES 2 on June 1 at 11:35 PM ET and a 24-hour marathon on June 29 beginning at 5AM ET. And, nearly all of the stunt's movies are available via the network's free-on-demand offering to subscribers throughout the month.

In addition to these popular movies, true film aficionados will enjoy a special added treat in June, as Sony Movie Channel, honors the anniversaries of two important motion pictures. On Wednesday, June 19 at 10 PM ET/7:00 PM PT, SMC is celebrating the 50(th) anniversary of the Ray Harryhausen's masterpiece film JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS on the exact day of its premiere. The special effects innovator Harryhausen, who died earlier this month, often said this movie was his favorite, and it certainly is one that is cherished by his fans too. Then on Thursday, June 20 at 8:15 PM ET/5:15 PM PT, Sony Movie Channel observes the 60(th) anniversary of THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T, a children's musical from Dr. Seuss. This film marks the only time that Dr. Seuss wrote a story and screenplay specifically for a movie. He also penned the lyrics for the film's songs.

Catering to Hollywood film fans, Sony Movie Channel offers something for every movie buff every day of the week. The Channel features films on Mondays that appeal to the male demographic and in June there's comedies like MARDI GRAS: SPRING BREAK with Carmen Electra on June 3 and the crime drama SIN with Ving Rhames and Kerry Washington on June 10.

Under the umbrella of "Take Two," each Tuesday SMC programs two movies that have commonality. On June 18, a serial killer theme is featured with THE HUNT FOR THE BTK KILLER and EYE OF THE BEHOLDER. On June 25, seductive homicides take over with TO DIE FOR and BODY DOUBLE.

Wednesday nights are about reminiscing with classics from the 50's, 60's and 70's. On June 12, the Channel turns to classic crime investigation movies like IN A LONELY PLACE with Humphrey Bogart and THE BIG HEAT with Glenn Ford and Lee Marvin. On June 19, in addition to broadcasting Harryhausen's JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, SMC is airing the documentary that chronicles the career of Ray Harryhausen, RAY HARRYHAUSEN: SPECIAL EFFECTS TITAN. Alan Ladd becomes the focus on June 26, when the Channel broadcasts three motion pictures in which he starred - THE BLACK KNIGHT, PARATROOPER and ALL THE YOUNG MEN.

Foreign and festival films surround Thursday night's schedule and a special feature this month is programming on June 20, where eccentric musicals like NOT THE MESSIAH: HE'S A VERY NAUGHTY BOY with Eric Idle are airing. Dramas also take center stage on June 27 with TAXI DRIVER and AUTO FOCUS being the highlighted fare.

Blockbusters are always a part of Sony Movie Channel's Friday night offerings and on June 7 movies starring Sean Connery are spotlighted with FIRST KNIGHT and ROBIN AND MARIAN. Then on June 28, viewers will be scared watching two John Carpenter produced films back to back - JOHN CARPENTER'S GHOSTS OF MARS and JOHN CARPENTER PRESENTS VAMPIRES.

In addition to airing these films on the dates noted above, some of the movies are scheduled for further broadcasts throughout the month. To find out what other screen gems are airing in June please see the schedule on for further details.

New Music Streaming Survey Shows Trends in Europe - Usage and Willingness to Pay Continue to Increase

New Music Streaming Survey Shows Trends in Europe - Usage and Willingness to Pay Continue to Increase

OSLO, Norway, May 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

New numbers show that willingness to pay for music streaming services continues to
increase. To a much greater extent than before, this also applies for the older
generations and not just the youth. Usage has also increased and the respondents predict
that they will use streaming services even more in one year.

The numbers are from a survey conducted by Respons Analyse for streaming service WiMP
in January, February and March this year. WiMP runs the survey continuously in its current
markets, this time Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Poland.

"It is great to see that willingness to pay continues to increase and as a broader
scope of people start using streaming services, willingness to pay also increases across
age groups. The next step for WiMP now is to offer additional services such as WiMP HiFi
with lossless streaming that we are currently beta testing," says Per Einar Dybvik, Head
of Product and Norway CEO of WiMP.

The numbers show a significant increase in willingness to pay. Sweden, who has had
access to streaming services the longest, has now been overtaken by Norway: 48% of
Norwegians now say that they are willing to pay for a music streaming service, increasing
fifteen percentage points since June 2012. Poland, only recently gaining access to
services such as WiMP, has jumped straight into second place with 40% of Poles willing to
pay for such a service. In Sweden, 35% now say yes, followed by Denmark with 30% and
Germany, where 28% now claim to be willing to pay for a music streaming service. In
addition, a large amount answer that their willingness to pay depends on the service. An
average across all five countries of only 25% say no to payment.

WiMP has conducted population surveys since June 2011 and earlier surveys showed that
willingness to pay is strongest among the youngest generation, those under the age of 30.
The new numbers show that this is about to level out: The age group 30-39 is now almost as
willing to pay as those under 30 and the gap for higher age groups decreases. This applies
in all countries.

Usage of streaming has increased in all countries, and significantly in Sweden and
Norway. In the survey from last June, over one third of Swedes stated that they listened
to music through streaming last week. Although not directly comparable, the new survey
shows that almost half of Swedes and Norwegians now listen to music through streaming
weekly or more often and in total 3 in 4 use a streaming service in Sweden, 8 in 10 in
Norway. For the other countries, the numbers show that 30% of Danes, 33% of Germans and
37% of Poles listen to music through streaming weekly or more often. For comparison, 40%
of Norwegians, 36% of Swedes, 41% of Danes, 63% of Germans and 59% of Poles listen to
music from CDs weekly or more often.

According to the respondents, the streaming trend will continue to grow in the future:
When asked about how they think they will listen to music one year from now, 58% of
Norwegians, 53% of Swedes, 37% of Danes, 41% of Germans and 45% of Poles say they will
listen to music through streaming services weekly or more often. One year from now, 39% of
Norwegians, 36% of Swedes, 41% of Danes, 61% of Germans and 65% of Poles think they will
listen to music via CDs weekly or more often.

Pop is the genre most of the respondents state as their favorite, followed by rock.
However, respondents stating rock to be their favorite genre use streaming services to a
greater extent than those who enjoy pop the most. This is especially true for Norway,
Sweden and Germany.

Explorer and Director James Cameron to Launch DEEPSEA CHALLENGER on Cross-Country Journey from Los Angeles

Explorer and Director James Cameron to Launch DEEPSEA CHALLENGER on Cross-Country Journey from Los Angeles

In its first public display, submersible that 'Avatar' director and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence engineered and piloted for record-breaking solo dive to the deepest place on Earth will begin voyage from California Science Center to final home at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on June 1.

Rolex, Cameron to partner on educational expedition that will also take vessel to Dallas, New Orleans, Washington, D.C.

LOS ANGELES, May 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Explorer and director James Cameron and other officials will celebrate the launch of a cross-country expedition of one of the world's most remarkable pieces of technology.

On Saturday, June 1, the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, the submersible and science platform that Cameron piloted on March 26, 2012 on a record-breaking solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, will begin its voyage from the California Science Center in Los Angeles to its permanent home at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts.

The journey marks the first time the sub will be shown in public. Supported by Rolex, the trip is intended to engage and inspire children and to focus on the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in education.

Said Cameron:"One of the most critical aspects of exploration, besides actually going there and bringing back the pictures and the science, is the telling of the story. It's vital to communicate to the public, especially students of all ages, what was done, how it was done, and why it was important." Cameron added: "By telling the story to school-kids in a hands-on way, we can inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and explorers, who are so vital to the nation. Moving the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER cross-country to its new home at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution provides an opportunity to make the sub available to students and the general public, so they can see it, touch it, and ask questions. This will create a major inspirational dividend of the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE project."

Cameron, who donated the sub to WHOI and joined its Center for Marine Robotics to stimulate advances in ocean science and technology, will speak at the June 1 event at 1:30 p.m., as will WHOI President and Director Susan Avery. Suzy Amis Cameron, co-founder of Calabasas, CA.-based MUSE School, which is dedicated to early childhood education with a sustainable focus, will also present.

The bright green, 24-foot long DEEPSEA CHALLENGER will be on display at the California Science Center between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. before embarking on the trip. Scientists traveling with the sub across the country will explain the remarkable human achievement of the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition and the groundbreaking technology required for its success.

"This cross country journey will give many more people the opportunity to see the sub and to be inspired by the exploration and scientific discovery it enabled," said Susan Avery, president and director of WHOI.

The DEEPSEA CHALLENGER is scheduled to arrive in Dallas on Tuesday, June 4, at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. From there, it travels to New Orleans to the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas on Wednesday, June 5th. The sub then heads to Washington, D.C. for display on Capitol Hill June 11.It will be delivered to WHOI by mid-June. (Please check with local venues for details regarding display of the sub.)

The sub's trek across the U.S. comes a little more than a year after Cameron's unprecedented solo dive to 35,787 feet, almost 11,000 meters (6.8 miles), to the deepest place on Earth - the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench - in the marine vehicle the "Avatar" and "Titanic" director and his team engineered.

The DEEPSEA CHALLENGER was specifically engineered to be the first of its kind - a vertically-deployed, manned submersible and robust science platform capable of diving to full ocean depth. The sub's ability to remain at the bottom of the Challenger Deep for nearly three hours to explore, sample and capture the first high resolution 3D images ever taken of the location, is unprecedented. In 1960, the Trieste, the only other manned submersible to reach the Challenger Deep, was able to stay only 20 minutes on the bottom before ascending.

In March, 2013, Cameron donated the sub to WHOI. Upon its arrival in Massachusetts, WHOI scientists and engineers will begin to work with Cameron and his team to incorporate the sub's numerous engineering advancements into future research platforms and deep-sea expeditions. This partnership harnesses the power of public and private investment in supporting deep-ocean science.

Recognizing the power of new technologies, like those embodied in the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER system, to explore and understand the ocean, WHOI recently launched the Center for Marine Robotics (CMR), a novel collaborative model that enhances the development of robotic technologies by bringing together partners from academia, the federal government, and the private sector. The CMR's scientists and engineers will revolutionize the way people and machines work together in the marine environment and enable new approaches to complex scientific challenges. James Cameron will serve on the Center's Advisory Board.

DEEPSEA CHALLENGE, Cameron's eighth deep-ocean expedition, marks a globally-recognized milestone in an exploration and diving career spanning decades. An avid scuba diver since 1969, Cameron has logged more than 3,000 hours underwater, including 500 hours in helmets. He has made 85 submersible dives, most of them to depths greater than two miles. Seeking to combine his two great passions--diving and filmmaking--Cameron has directed numerous feature films and marine documentaries that have broken new ground in underwater cinematography, beginning with The Abyss in 1989. In 1995, he made 12 manned-submersible dives to the Titanic wreck for his feature film of the same name, which won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, and broke the record for global box office. Titanic's earnings have only been surpassed by Cameron's 2009 film, Avatar, which garnered an unprecedented $2.8 billion worldwide.

DEEPSEA CHALLENGE was a joint scientific expedition by James Cameron, the National Geographic Society, and Rolex. Learn more at

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is a private, non-profit organization on Cape Cod, Mass., dedicated to marine research, engineering, and higher education. WHOI operates the National Deep Submergence Facility, which operates deep sea exploration vehicles for the benefit of the entire U.S. oceanographic community and includes the human occupied vehicle Alvin, the remotely operated vehicle Jason and the autonomous vehicle Sentry. Established in 1930 on a recommendation from the National Academy of Sciences, WHOI's primary mission is to understand the oceans and their interaction with the Earth as a whole, and to communicate a basic understanding of the oceans' role in the changing global environment. Court Yard Hounds Announce Highly Anticipated Follow-Up Album Amelita, Available July 16

Court Yard Hounds Announce Highly Anticipated Follow-Up Album Amelita, Available July 16

NEW YORK, May 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- After releasing their self-titled debut, Court Yard Hounds, to much critical acclaim, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire are at it again. Today the sisters announced they will release their highly anticipated follow up album Amelita on July 16(th) on Columbia Records.

Containing 11 new tracks, Robison and Maguire took a different approach with Amelita than their debut album in 2010. This album contains a new perspective, which is due in part to time passed since Robison's divorce. "I've been freed of all of those time-heals-everything kind of things," says Emily Robison. "Now, I've opened up to other ideas and ways of looking at life and the world."

"I think it's not only a more hopeful album, but it's more... well fun," adds Robinson.

The new direction is apparent on title track "Amelita," which has a breezy south-of-the-border sound, or "Phoebe," which calls in a frenetic, anxious melody, and chillingly close harmonies. Lead single "Sunshine," co-written by acclaimed singer/songwriter Jonathan Brooke along with Martin Strayer and Alex Dezen, oozes with irony as the girls flash their carefully manicured claws through silken harmonies.

Robison's vocals captivate listeners as she sings lead on most tracks, while Maguire co-wrote seven of the 11 songs on the album, penned "Road You Take" herself, and sings lead on "Guy Like You," which she wrote with guitarist Martin Strayer.

The girls teamed up with the same producer, Jim Scott, who they've had a true connection with since their first album. Surrounding themselves with Jim and guitarist Martin Strayer, who was also an integral part of the first album, the girls took a comfortable and pro-active approach to creating their music this time around. "I think we've approached it differently because we felt like okay, we are a band. We aren't just two ex-Dixie Chicks anymore, we're a band and we like our sound and we're going to continue to do this and hopefully get better at it, and share something new this time around," said Maguire.

After a few years away from the lime light and the Dixie Chicks, the two sisters were ready to get back into the studio with the creation of Court Yard Hounds, named after the novel within Game of Thrones creator David Benioff's novel City of Thieves. The process proved exhilarating and fulfilling and was welcomed with much critical and fan praise, securing the girls a spot in the Top 10 of the Billboard Charts for their debut. To them a follow-up album was a clear next step, affirming the Court Yard Hounds as a band, not just a side project.

The Court Yard Hounds' new album is a clear statement of who the girls are as artists, defining their sound as a band, with soaring songs that are personal, yet familiar and widely relatable.

Step Afrika! Symphony in Step Premieres in D.C. June 5-9

Step Afrika! Symphony in Step Premieres in D.C. June 5-9

Performance is a groundbreaking merger of stepping and classical music

WASHINGTON, May 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Symphony in Step will have its East Coast premiere at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., from June 5-9, 2013. The dramatic merger of stepping, a percussive dance form developed by African American college students, and classical music features Step Afrika!, a 15-piece symphony orchestra and the largely unknown history of George Bridgetower.

Tickets are available by calling the Atlas Performing Arts Center box office (202-399-7993, press 2) or at Ticket prices range from $20-$48.50.

The two-act percussive dance performance has its origins in a 2011 cross-country collaboration with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, but the D.C. series features new work that explores the history of Bridgetower, an Afro-Polish child prodigy and violin virtuoso who toured Europe in the early 1800s and eventually inspired Master composer Ludwig Van Beethoven to compose the famous Kreutzer Sonata.

The first act of Symphony in Step will feature music inspired by Bridgetower along with his teachers and composers, Franz Joseph Haydn and Beethoven, performed on piano, violin and drum and interpreted by Step Afrika!

The second act will feature a 15-piece chamber orchestra assembled especially for this project with professional musicians from across the D.C. area and graduate students from Catholic University's Classical Music program.

Anchorage Symphony Orchestra conductor Randall Fleischer and Step Afrika! Founder and Executive Director C. Brian Williams collaborated on the score with some original compositions developed by Fleisher while other music came from Step Afrika!'s existing repertoire. Step Afrika! Artistic Director Jakari Sherman responded with the choreography for Symphony in Step, a performance in which rhythmic footwork, body percussion and spoken word is entwined with jazz, gospel and classical masterpieces.

Founded in 1994, Step Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Today, Step Afrika! performs worldwide to promote an appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition's use as an educational tool for young people. Recent 2013 international performances include appearances in Spain, Italy, Paraguay, Montenegro, Croatia and Latvia.

Based in Washington, DC, Step Afrika! is DC's first and only Cultural Ambassador representing the city and nation at events around the world. The company completes an annual 50-city tour of colleges and theaters from Maine to Mississippi and is a national model for the use of stepping in schools. Step Afrika! is a frequent partner of the Washington Performing Arts Society and has graced some of America's most prestigious stages from the White House to the Lincoln Center in New York City.

Step Afrika! Symphony in Step Schedule:
