Mental Illness: New Study Explores Link with Creativity; NAMI Events Include Music, Drama and Other Arts

WASHINGTON, June 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is focusing on films, music and other creative arts this week--at the same time that a new scientific study has found a possible explanation for the link between mental illness and uninhibited processing in the brain that allows people to think "outside the box."

In "Beautiful Minds: Creativity and Mental Illness" appearing in the latest issue of NAMI's Advocate e-magazine, NAMI highlights a Swedish study and other research exploring potential links between schizophrenia and artistic tendencies.

The Swedish study shows that highly creative people have a lower density of dopamine receptors in the thalamus. People living with schizophrenia also have been found to have low dopamine density. Other studies suggest that a genetic difference may be shared by creative people and those with psychotic symptoms.

In NAMI's weekly blog, NAMI Executive Director Michael Fitzpatrick discusses creativity as a "powerful" means for education about mental illness. In fact, "creativity is required by anyone whose life is touched by mental illness" in order to enhance education, support and recovery.

The 2010 NAMI Convention opening this week in Washington, D.C. includes many artistic elements, including a performance by Grammy-award-winning singer Susan McKeown. On Friday evening, award-winning poet and songwriter Michael Mack will perform portions of Speaking in Tongues, about his mother's life with schizophrenia.

The Free at Last Players, a theatre troupe now in their 20th year, will speak openly in skits and songs about their experiences with mental illness and different forms of stigma and exclusion.

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month also begins this week and the NAMI Advocate "Bookshelf" feature recommends reading the newly-published novel Try to Remember by Iris Gomez as "a wonderful way" to observe it. Set in Miami in the 1970s, the book portrays a family's struggle with mental illness from a Latino perspective. Their teenage holds them together in the face of her father's battle with schizophrenia.. Fewer than one in 20 Latino immigrants with mental illness ever get help.

It is 2010, but the National Association of Black Journalists sees our cable news networks moving backward when it comes to who they believe is worthy of anchoring prime-time news shows.

NABJ was founded in 1975 to encourage news media companies to hire and to promote more Black journalists. At that time, black journalists originally hired to cover riots during the turbulent 1960s found they were not being assigned to other meaningful beats or were only allowed to cover "Black" stories.

NABJ's advocacy for fair hiring practices paid off. Many of our founders, including columnists Les Payne in New York and DeWayne Wickham in Washington, D.C., and anchor Maureen Bunyan in Washington, D.C. remain prominent figures in the media.

NABJ continues this advocacy today. To be candid, we have been focusing our talks with media executives on ways they can increase the diversity of their news management teams. It is our belief that a diverse management team improves coverage decisions and hiring practices. It seems, though, that the companies have taken that to mean that we don't care about who is on the air. We're watching, and we do.

Over the past several years, NABJ Executive Board members have met with leaders of the top media companies. Our message: "Let us help if you are looking for diverse talent."

Some of the companies have reached out, but the names we have submitted never seem to be called in for interviews.

Three years ago, Ebony magazine's Kevin Chappell noted, "While CNN has the most Black news anchors with eight, the other cable networks don't (fare) as well... and none of the national cable stations has any Blacks in prime-time slots."

Nothing has changed. NABJ questions CNN's decision to hire former New York governor/attorney general Eliot Spitzer to co-host a new show in Campbell Brown's old time slot. The company missed another opportunity to place a person of color in prime time. It just seems that cable news can never find diverse candidates who are good enough to meet their standards. We want to know your standards.

Are you telling us that CNN could find no one better than an ex-politician who quit being New York governor after consorting with prostitutes to grace America's living rooms each night?

CNN does have Tony Harris anchoring in the morning, and Fredricka Whitfield, T.J. Holmes, and Don Lemon on the weekends. But that's not prime time. The same can be said about MSNBC which last week named veteran Lawrence O'Donnell as the anchor of its new 10 p.m. show. The prime-time host line-up at Fox News also lacks any racial diversity.

"In his story, Chappell talked with NABJ Member and CBS News anchor Russ Mitchell who summed up what many of us have witnessed over the years. Mitchell told Ebony "I've been to journalism conferences over and over again, and heard some executive say 'I'd like to hire more African-Americans, but I just can't find any qualified ones out there.' That was b.s. then, and that's b.s. now."

NABJ couldn't agree more.

WASHINGTON, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Comcast and One Economy recently recognized a class of 17 graduates from the Comcast Digital Connectors program in Washington, D.C. at a special ceremony held on Friday, June 11 at the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC). The Comcast Digital Connectors program in Washington, D.C., which launched in July of 2009, provided LAYC youth from diverse, low-income backgrounds with an opportunity to learn about broadband technologies and how to put that knowledge to work in a wide range of community service activities.

Among those celebrating the accomplishments of the graduates at the event were LAYC and Comcast leaders and staff, representatives from One Economy, parents and family members of the Digital Connectors graduates and members of the greater LAYC community. In addition to certificates of recognition, each student received a netbook computer and flip camera.

The Comcast Digital Connectors program in Washington, D.C. took place during after-school hours and students could choose to participate in either the Technology Group or Media Group. As part of the program, participants also volunteered their time at community-based organizations, senior centers, churches and even in their own homes to help improve digital literacy.

The Technology Group had eight LAYC student graduates and focused on learning to work with software and hardware. Activities included leadership exercises and computer technology classes that involved Microsoft Office Certification, web design, computer repair fundamentals, video editing, photography and more. Participants also attended a tour of the U.S. Capitol, participated in workshops, helped to build the Computer Lab at the LAYC Teen Center, taught computer classes in their local communities and participated in Comcast Cares Day, the company's annual, nationwide day of service.

The Media Group had nine LAYC student graduates and focused on using media and broadband technology to make a positive impact in the community. Activities included leadership and teamwork skills development; an introduction to digital media fundamentals including video, audio, photography, graphic manipulation and blogging; and extensive exploration of media and technology's impact on the community and the concept of socially engaged media. Participants shared their media skills with other local students and produced an hour-long bilingual radio special about teens and drug abuse as well as an official video submission to the Human Rights Film Festival. Five of the students were selected to receive the Eric Moe Scholarship to attend the Mountainfilm Festival in recognition of their commitment to socially engaged media making.

One Economy founded the Digital Connectors' program and curriculum in 2003. Today there are youth engaged in Digital Connectors programs throughout the United States as well as similar digital literacy initiatives in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Cameroon and Nigeria. The One Economy-Comcast partnership aims to double the number of participants in the program and the hours of service they contribute to their communities.

In addition to Washington D.C., the Comcast Digital Connectors program was launched in Houston, Texas; Springfield, Massachusetts; Morgantown, West Virginia; Burlington, Vermont; Tallahassee, Florida and Miami, Florida. Due to the popularity of the program, Clearview is now offering these movies two days per week during the eight-week series. The series features a new favorite children's movie every Wednesday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m.

LOS ANGELES, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Daniel Pearl Foundation today issued a call for musicians around the world to join in "Harmony for Humanity" by participating in the 9th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days which will be held October 1 - 31, 2010.

Every October for the past eight years, thousands of professional and amateur musicians from every musical genre have dedicated their performances around their common humanity inspired by the legacy of journalist/musician Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal South Asia Bureau Chief, who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan shortly after 9/11. Centered around Danny's October birthday, participating musicians commemorate his life and work by using the universal language of music to spread a message of hope that brings people together in a united stand for peace and against the culture of violence. Since World Music Days' inception in 2002, more than 4,900 concerts in 102 countries have been dedicated.

Gettysburg - The Complete Radio Drama


In the tradition of classic radio plays, with a full cast, music and sound effects, SIRIUS XM Book Radio will broadcast The Colonial Radio Theater production of Gettysburg. Listeners will be transported back to the battlefield to experience historical places and moments, including General Buford's skirmish line, Little Round Top, The Wheatfield, Pickett's Charge, and President Lincoln's address four months later.

Gettysburg airs Saturday, July 3 from 8:00 - 9:00 pm ET, Sunday, July 4 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm ET and Monday, July 5 from 8:00 - 9:00 pm ET .

WORLD CUP: On Independence Day, SIRIUS XM will celebrate Team USA's dramatic journey through the 2010 FIFA World Cup by replaying every 2010 U.S. World Cup match starting at 6:00 am ET. Each match - including the stirring draws with England and Slovenia, the electrifying group-clinching victory over Algeria, and the hard-fought, extra time loss to Ghana in the second round - will re-air in its entirety throughout the day on XM channel 236 and SIRIUS channel 214 (as part of the "Best of XM" programming package)).

International 3D Society Announces Board

LOS ANGELES, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The International 3D Society announced today its Board of Governors, and elected its Executive Committee for fiscal year 2010-2011.

Buzz Hays was named Chair and Jim Mainard Chair-Elect. Hays is Executive Stereoscopic 3D Producer of Sony 3D Technology Center, Sony Corporation of America; Mainard is Head of Production Development at DreamWorks Animation (DWA).

Lenny Lipton will serve as Vice Chair of the Executive Committee; he is President, Oculus 3D. Jeannine Patton is First Vice Chair/Secretary; she is Vice President and General Manager of Panasonic Hollywood Lab, Panasonic Corporation of North America. David Shackley, Senior Vice President, Discovery Communications and Jim Chabin, President of the Society, will also serve on the Executive Committee.

The International 3D Society provides community, education, and recognition to its membership and is dedicated to the advancement of Stereoscopic 3D arts and technology.
