MPS to Host Band Performances at Orchestra Hall in Celebration of Citywide Art Festival

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) invite students, families and community members to a performing arts concert in celebration of Viva City, a citywide festival showcasing student achievement in visual and performing arts across the city.

Now in its sixteenth year, Viva City represents a culmination of months of classroom learning relative to arts education. The concert will be hosted by T. Mychael Rambo, local actor, musician and educator. More than 400 students participating in three band groups will perform at Orchestra Hall:

-- The Fanfare Band is comprised of band students in grades 5 - 8 from
four different schools. This performance will feature music from
distant places and times under the direction of Faye Blakely
Washington, jazz singer, former MPS music teacher and conductor of
prestigious local bands.
-- The Festival Band is comprised of students in grades 9 - 12 from three
different schools. This performance will feature exquisite band
literature under the direction of St. Olaf professor of music Dr. Tim
Mahr.
-- The Cultural Dimensions Band is comprised of students in grades 6 - 12
from ten different schools. This performance will feature music by
Bela Bartok, traditional music from Haiti and a contemporary piece
performed with musical guests Ilays/Beam of Light, a Somali rock band.
The Cultural Dimensions Band will perform under the direction of
Augsburg College music professor Dr. Robert Stacke.

The performances will demonstrate the progression of artistic learning students experience within the Minneapolis Public Schools. There is no cost to attend. Viva City is coordinated by MPS Comprehensive Arts, which advances student achievement and improves teacher practice through the creation of arts-rich classroom experiences.
