'Dreamgirls' Sings at the Box Office

'Dreamgirls' Sings at the Box Office

Earns $20.35 Million for Holiday Week-End

Cume Stands at $43.31 Million for First 8 Days in Wide Release

Bill Condon's sensational musical strikes a cord with enthusiastic audiences

Film release will expand January 12

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- "Dreamgirls" first week in wide release was a huge success, the film expanded from 3 to 852 theatres on Christmas Day. After earning a whopping $8.7 million on Christmas Day, the film has gone on to rack up $43.31 million in its first 8 days of wide release. The film took in an estimated $15.5 million for the three day week- end with a per screen average of $18,200 and the studio is projecting $20.35 million for the four day week-end.

"Dreamgirls'" $8.7 million Christmas Day bow generated the best single day ever for a musical. This Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Pictures co-production, directed by Bill Condon and starring Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy represents the third-biggest box office total for a film that opened or went national on Christmas Day, bested only by 2001's "Ali" and 2002's "Catch Me if You Can," both of which opened in more than 2,000 theatres, compared to "Dreamgirls' more limited release in 852 theatres.

This holiday-season feel-good film has been playing to very enthusiastic crowds. Audiences have been applauding and cheering after musical numbers and even giving the film standing ovations while it plays. In exit surveys, moviegoers across the country have given the film a 95% favorable rating. "That's the highest I've ever seen," said Rob Moore, Paramount Pictures president and worldwide marketing and distribution adding, "not only have audiences responded to surveys with spectacular scores, we've seen them respond to the movie in a remarkable way with ovations during the performance of the film."

That sentiment was echoed by distribution executives from major national chains. Muvico theater chain's corporate communications VP John J. Spano said, "The audience reaction to 'Dreamgirls' at our Egyptian 24 location in Hanover, Maryland and Paradise24 in Davie, Florida have been remarkable. Our theater management reports they rarely receive as many positive comments about a film as they have with this one and they are seeing many guests come back again and again to see this film! They tell us that at the conclusion of the musical numbers our guests have been applauding, cheering and on several occasions we have seen standing ovations. From our guest reactions to 'Dreamgirls' it is apparent that the musical genre of film is alive and well and has a place at the top of the box office."

And Greg Dunn, President and COO of the Regal Entertainment Group said, "Regal Entertainment Group has seen an enthusiastic response to 'Dreamgirls' all over the country. In downtown Philadelphia, crowds on Christmas Day were giving the movie a standing ovation. In Long Beach, California some audiences applauded after every musical number. And in St. Louis people leaving 'Dreamgirls' were so excited that they stopped strangers, encouraging them to see the film. The combination of storytelling and musical excellence is certainly hitting a chord with Regal audiences."

The popular groundswell for the movie combined with a slew of awards nominations and critics' association kudos, including five Golden Globe nominations and seven Broadcast Film Critics Association nominations should bode well for the box office performance when "Dreamgirls" expands its release to approximately 1800 theatres on Friday, January 12.

Rudy* May Have Started With the Help of the New DVD, 'Getting Recruited To Play College Football'

Rudy* May Have Started With the Help of the New DVD, 'Getting Recruited To Play College Football'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Dec. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Rudy* may have started for Notre Dame with the help of a new recruiting DVD, "Getting Recruited to Play College Football."

"The recruiting process is daunting for parents the first time they try to help their child play at the college level," said Scott Rokosny, president of Garden State Video North, a leading video production and corporate communications firm which has produced hundreds of student athlete recruiting DVDs. "They don't know where or when to start. 'Getting Recruited to Play College Football' can show parents and prospects the right moves to make in the recruiting process. It may also help those non-'blue-chippers' catch the eyes of college coaches before National Signing Day in February."

Rokosny, a former coach and state championship player, noted that the DVD features coaches, parents and players providing insights on a range of issues families will face in the recruiting process, including:

-- How and when to start your search
-- What coaches look for in a prospect
-- What scholarships and other financial aid are offered at the various
college division levels
-- Recruiting terminology
-- How to be academically eligible for college
-- The importance of a highlight recruiting DVD for your student athlete
and what needs to be included in the piece
-- The role of camps
-- Life as a collegiate student athlete.

Christopher Melvin, a Recruiting Analyst with Eliterecruits.com, is interviewed on the DVD and he provides insights into the role recruiting services can play for prospects.

"Just when you think you figured-out the recruiting process, it's over," said Scott Lakatos, a Division 1A coach also interviewed on the DVD. "You might do better the second time around with another child, but most people don't get the opportunity."

The 45-minute DVD, produced by Garden State Video North, is available for $44.95 plus tax, shipping and handling by calling 973-884-3636, writing to gstatevideo@gmail.com, or visiting the Web site at www.gsvideo.net.

Sinclair Extends DIRECTV Rebate Offer in Mediacom Markets

Sinclair Extends DIRECTV Rebate Offer in Mediacom Markets

Mediacom's Carriage of Sinclair Stations Remains Scheduled to End on January 6, 2007

BALTIMORE, Dec. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:SBGI) announced today that it has extended the DIRECTV rebate offer that it has made available in markets where Sinclair stations are currently carried on cable systems owned by Mediacom Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:MCCC). As previously announced, Sinclair does not expect to reach a new agreement with Mediacom prior to the termination of their existing retransmission consent agreement. As a result, Sinclair expects Mediacom to discontinue carriage of a number of television stations when that agreement ends at 12:01 a.m. on January 6, 2007.

The DIRECTV offer, which makes available rebates of up to either $150 or $100 depending on the market, had been scheduled to end on December 31, 2006. As a result of the extension, qualified consumers can take advantage of the rebates by signing up for DIRECTV by February 5, 2007.

"It is unfortunate that we apparently will not be able to reach agreement with Mediacom," commented Barry Faber, Sinclair's Vice President and General Counsel, "but we again want to remind our viewers in Mediacom markets that alternative means for watching our great programming continue to exist. These alternatives include both over-the-air and direct broadcast satellite. By extending the DIRECTV rebate offer, which is intended to compensate viewers for the inconvenience of having to make alternative arrangements, we hope to make it easier for the public to continue to enjoy our stations."

The stations and markets impacted are listed below, with the availability and amount of the DIRECTV rebate noted after each market name. Subscribers in markets with a $150 rebate must call 1-800-376-4388 and subscribers in markets with a $100 rebate must call 1-800-341-4388. AT&T Introduces U-verse in Bloomington

AT&T Introduces U-verse in Bloomington

High Definition Programming and Other Compelling Features Make AT&T U-verse TV the Most Advanced Video Offering in the Market

Through March 31, New Customers May Receive Two Months of Free TV With 60-Day Money Back Guarantee

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Dec. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A new world of communications and entertainment is now available to some Bloomington residents. AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced the initial launch of AT&T U- verse(SM), which utilizes AT&T's fiber-rich network that extends optical connections deeper into neighborhoods. U-verse services are initially available in limited areas throughout the Bloomington metropolitan statistical area (MSA). AT&T plans to expand availability on an ongoing basis.

AT&T U-verse offers customers a combination of next-generation digital television -- including more than 25 High Definition (HD) channels -- and high speed Internet access. The award-winning AT&T U-verse TV includes cutting- edge features that are unmatched in the market, while the new U-verse enabled AT&T Yahoo!(R) High Speed Internet builds on AT&T's position as the nation's leading provider of broadband DSL.

"AT&T U-Verse reinvents television and brings Hoosiers a new choice for entertainment," said Hardmon Williams, AT&T vice president and general manager for Indiana. "We are proud to make Bloomington consumers among the first in the nation to enjoy an experience unlike anything in the marketplace today."

Beginning today, AT&T U-verse TV will offer Bloomington residents:

-- A compelling variety of TV packages with more than 300 channels,
including digital music, local, and premium movie and sports
programming.
-- HD technology that produces images more than twice as detailed as
standard analog TV delivering rich, realistic video and multi-channel,
movie-theater-quality sound. AT&T U-verse offers customers access to
a growing lineup of more than 25 HD channels, more than the local
cable provider. New HD customers can receive two months of free HD
service ($10 a month thereafter).
-- Web remote access to digital video recorder (DVR), which allows
customers to schedule recordings using their AT&T Yahoo! Internet
account. This feature is unique to AT&T among local providers.
-- The ability to record up to four programs at once using a DVR
receiver, another exclusive feature unmatched in the marketplace.
-- Built-in picture-in-picture functionality that allows subscribers to
channel surf on any television without leaving the program they're
watching.
-- Specially designed set top boxes, manufactured by Motorola, all of
which are HD-capable and include universal remote controls that
provide backlit buttons and one-touch access to VOD, DVR, and other
services.
-- A premium Spanish-language package featuring novelas, movies, news,
sports, children's programming, talk shows and more. New customers
can receive the package at no charge for the first two months ($10 a
month thereafter).
-- Fast channel-changing, eliminating the delay experienced with other
digital broadcast services.
-- The ability to search for programs using title or actor's name.
-- Three TV receivers - one with a DVR, which allows customers to pause,
rewind, replay and record live TV - at no extra charge with most
programming packages. (Customers may add more receivers for $5 each a
month.)

AT&T plans to continue adding more channels and interactive applications in the future.

Customers can choose from five TV and three Internet packages to customize their entertainment experience. In addition to the popular U300 and U400 packages, AT&T also offers U-family, a market-leading family-friendly programming option. Current AT&T U-verse TV offers start as low as $44 a month, depending on the selected programming and Internet packages (other monthly charges apply).

Now through March 31, qualified new customers can join AT&T U-verse and receive free TV service, including HBO(R) and Cinemax(R), for the first two months when they choose the U300 or U400 programming package (other monthly charges apply). Thereafter, customers will continue to receive recurring monthly discounts when they subscribe to a bundle of TV and Internet service. In addition, AT&T will offer new customers a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Three packages of AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet U-verse Enabled will be made available to AT&T U-verse customers:

-- Elite: Downstream up to 6.0 Mbps, upstream up to 1.0 Mbps.
-- Pro: Downstream up to 3.0 Mbps, upstream up to 1.0 Mbps.
-- Express: Downstream up to 1.5 Mbps, upstream up to 1.0 Mbps.

All high speed Internet packages offered as part of AT&T U-verse include wireless home-networking at no charge, giving users the freedom to access online photos, streaming video, games and other information using a wireless- enabled laptop or other device. Subscribers also receive virtually unlimited e-mail storage and powerful anti-virus and anti-spam software.

The deployment of next-generation video services reflects AT&T's strategy to become customers' preferred communications and entertainment provider and to deliver a video solution through its traditional footprint that provides greater value, flexibility and simplicity than competitors' offerings. AT&T U-verse TV represents a critical new service in the company's video portfolio, which today includes AT&T | DISH Network and AT&T Homezone(SM) service, which integrates AT&T | DISH Network and AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet. AT&T U- verse TV also underscores the company's strategy to deliver integrated services to the three screens many consumers say are most valued today: the PC, the TV and the wireless phone.

Thereafter, customers will continue to receive recurring monthly discounts when they subscribe to a bundle of TV and Internet service. In addition, AT&T will offer new customers a 60-day money-back guarantee.

-- Express: Downstream up to 1.5 Mbps, upstream up to 1.0 Mbps.

All high speed Internet packages offered as part of AT&T U-verse include wireless home-networking at no charge, giving users the freedom to access online photos, streaming video, games and other information using a wireless-enabled laptop or other device.

High Speed Internet. AT&T U-verse TV also underscores the company's strategy to deliver integrated services to the three screens many consumers say are most valued today: the PC, the TV and the wireless phone.

Alcohol-related Traffic Deaths Jump on New Year's Eve

Some New Year's predictions are, tragically, very reliable. For example, significantly more people are likely to die in alcohol-related traffic crashes on New Year's Eve than on other mid-week winter evenings. A recent analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics shows that, by the time our country finished ringing in the year 2005 (the last year for which data are available), one hundred thirty-five people had died in alcohol-related traffic crashes in the twelve hour span between Six P-M on New Year's Eve and six A-M the next morning. Two weeks later, on the same night of the week, the death toll dropped dramatically to fifty-nine.

'China from the Inside' Comes to PBS

'China from the Inside' Comes to PBS

- Four-hour mini-series by Jonathan Lewis to air January 2007 -

- Viewers will get an insider's perspective to an enigmatic country -

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- China is rapidly becoming a world power, but much of the country and its people remain hidden to those outside its borders. This winter, PBS viewers will get an insider's view of China, her institutions and people. China from the Inside, a four-hour mini-series co-produced by KQED and Granada Television, airs on two consecutive Wednesdays, January 10 at 9pm and January 17 at 9pm (2 hours each night, check local listings).

China is at a critical point in its history -- it is richer and stronger than ever, but the clash between economic policies and the Communist political agenda complicates the lives of many of its citizens. China from the Inside includes perspectives ranging from those of the powerful to the powerless, the scholars and the uneducated, and the supporters and detractors of today's China. It does not shy away from China's many contradictions, with scenes from some of the most breathtaking places on the planet as well as the most polluted. Candid conversations with modern urban people are featured along with inhabitants of traditional rural communities.

China from the Inside includes visits to temples in Tibet, Communist Party meetings, a village election, court rooms, newspaper offices, a women's labor camp, and a country wedding. From these domains, viewers observe the difficulties of navigating politics and culture in this vast country. In only four hours, viewers will be able to discern a China that few outside the country ever glimpse, a country of 1.3 billion people undergoing extraordinary growth while facing prodigious obstacles.

The four one-hour episodes of China from the Inside are:

Episode 1: Power and the People

How does the Communist Party exert control over 1.3 billion Chinese? Are village elections a chance for people to take a share in power? Can the Party end the rampant corruption and keep the people's trust? Chinese people, from farmer to Minister, speak frankly about the problems the country faces and the ways forward.

Episode 2: Women of the Country

China's women are argued over at their weddings and have one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Now many are beginning to fight for their rights and their futures. This hour shows discrimination against Xinjiang's Muslim women, various hardships faced by Tibetan women, and the status of some of those who have left the countryside for factory work in the cities.

Episode 3: Shifting Nature

China's environment is in trouble, but solutions often seem as harsh as the problems. A third of the world uses water from China's rivers, but rapid industrialization and climate change have led to bad air, polluted rivers and dire water shortages. One "solution" that has received considerable media attention in the West is the channeling of water in the biggest hydraulic project in world history. While it has benefited nearly half a million people, relocation from dam areas is causing mammoth social upheaval.

Episode 4: Freedom and Justice

Religious worship in China is problematic for Tibetan Buddhists, Catholics separated from Vatican influence, the 40 million adherents of China's unofficial churches, and the Falun Gong. Civic problems include forced evictions, government cover-up of AIDS, corruption and land grabbing. Filmed in Tibetan temples, newspaper offices and a labor camp, this final episode asks: what are the limits of freedom -- and the threats to stability?

China from the Inside is a co-production of KQED and Granada Television and is produced by award-winning documentary filmmaker Jonathan Lewis. Presented by KQED Presents, it is underwritten by the CPB, KQED Campaign for the Future Program Venture Fund, David & Cecilia Lee, and individuals. A complete list is available upon request to PBS.

DETROIT, Dec. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Pontiac announced that Dallas based rock band Radiant has emerged as the winning band of their nationwide musical talent search -- "Countdown to 1." Radiant is comprised of Levi Smith on vocals and guitar, Dragan Jakovljevic on guitar and Daniel Hopkins on drums. The band members, all in their twenties, released their latest LP, We Hope You Win this year and have three other full length albums to their credit: A Year of Holidays (2001) and The Sound of Splitting Atoms (2003). "Radiant has worked incredibly hard over the last several years," said lead singer and the band's founder, Levi Smith. "We entered Pontiac's 'Countdown to 1' on a whim and never thought it would go this far. It was quite a shock to hear that we actually got a break like this. We're really excited about the opportunity and are looking forward to spending time in New York."

"Countdown to 1"

More than 1,000 bands entered the "Countdown to 1" contest www.countdownto1.com where they submitted an MP3 track and short essay describing why the judge's panel should select the band. Radiant now has the breakthrough booking of a lifetime -- a chance to open for My Chemical Romance and POD, in Times Square, on New Year's Eve in front of millions of people, and an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The winning band was chosen by a panel of judges from Pontiac and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Fans were also able to participate in "Countdown to 1." During the promotional period there was a fan sweepstakes giving away an all-expenses-paid trip for two to New York City for all of the New Year's Eve celebrations as the VIP guests of Pontiac and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The winning fan is Sheri Singleton, from Rustburg, Va. Fans visiting countdownto1.com were also able to rate daily music and video submissions as well as view Jimmy Kimmel's "New Music of the Day" selections where he posted daily top-ten videos and tracks.
